1. What good are 'Free' memberships?
by Robert Nixon
We all hear about joining this or that for Free.
It is often used as an inducer to get interested
people into an association or to get exposure to your products.
All you are really getting is their e-mail address, if your business
is internet based and depending upon the lead form used.
IT is up to YOU then to convert them from a prospect into
a client.
This is where using some form of 'double opt-in' really shows
itself as a wise choice on your part.
During the process itself, the prospect has to think a little
more seriously about what they are doing and it will give you
a record of their doing so, in case of a Spam complaint from them
later on.
The prospect may even be a competitor trying to eliminate you.
The prospect may forget they joined and not remember they agreed
to your messages or attempts to contact them.
OR, they may even be a child out playing on the internet.
Now your knowledgeable use of your timed AutoResponders messages,
a personal phone call or a 'low key' method comes into play.
Do not think you will convert a very large percentage from being
a Free prospect to a paid client.
Many are like those that post to your links type of sites, they want something
for nothing and will do nothing trying to get something.
(Except complain when their expectations are not realized)
The conversion ratio is on a good day about one out of every thousand or two, so
it comes back into being a numbers game for you.
Many are over coming this in some degree by giving very low introductory rates
for a 'Trail' membership and at the end of that time, giving the prospect the
option to either quit or continue at the normal or discounted rate.
I personally think this is the better way to go. It forces the prospect to use
or become active in your programs or to purchase your
product from the start and once they do, the odds turn in your favor.
To make money you have to have a solid product.
You have to convey the benefits of your product to your prospect
or you may have a one time sale only.
They in turn want to see a positive result from their purchase
AND YOU CAN NOT BLAME THEM FOR DOING SO.....
YOU are in business after all and they look to you as being the professional at
what you do.
For instance: I do website marketing and promotions.
In this newsletter I inform you on how to do what I do yourself.
Even so, you will have to purchase something, a domain, a hosting service, etc.
I will NOT do it for you unless you pay me.
You must also consider and realize:
It will take an investment of time and money.
If you have the time, you can save money by doing most of it yourself.
If you have the money, you can save time by having it done for you.
You can not get good results however, by spending only a little time and small
amounts of money.
( I hear complaints about how expensive a tool that cost only $3.00 a
month !!)
It takes a balance of both OVER A PERIOD OF TIME to produce results.
The two go hand in hand and there must be a balance or you will not
get the results you desire.
It makes no sense and is not good business to do otherwise.
Every business internet or not, takes time to become established and requires
constant attention once it is in order to expand or to stay at a level that
justifies it's existence.
Every business internet or not, takes an investment of money to become
established and to pay for overhead to maintain itself.
YOU have to sit down and really ask yourself what you really desire and what you
will do to achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
You have to sit down and really look at what your prospects and clients desire
and how YOU are going to provide them with what they desire, and how YOU are
going to keep them once they do.
ALWAYS REMEMBER; Never spend any money you are not willing to lose or do without
for a time. There are NO sure fire or guaranteed ANYTHING in life or
business...it's all a gamble and you must accept the fact that you may not
succeed just as much as the fact that you will.
IF anyone tells you otherwise, get as far away from them as you can, and be sure
to take your checkbook with you.

2.'Tis the Season: Build a Search Engine Marketing Budget
BY Fredrick Marckini
Which comes first?
The search engine marketing (SEM) budget or the SEM campaign?
For many companies seeking to engage an SEM firm for the first time, the answer
won't make them particularly happy.
Budgeting for SEM without actually being engaged in SEM is a real challenge. No
buyer's guide to SEM firms or vendor Web sites can explain the work your own
site requires before it's search-engine friendly.
Pay-per-click (PPC) search advertising is even more difficult to forecast
without being actively engaged in a campaign. You must test to see how many
clicks to expect per day at what CPC by keyword, to net what return on
investment (ROI).
Before merrily ringing in the New Year, expect to roll up your sleeves and get
your hands dirty if you hope to develop a fairly accurate SEM budget for 2004.
There are no silver bullets in this process, just some guidance and insight into
pricing, costs, and a few rules of thumb on how to use them.
An SEM budget has three primary components:
SEM professional services (includes "natural" search engine
optimization, or SEO)
Paid-inclusion services
PPC search advertising
Professional-Services Fees
SEM professional services are similar to any other professional services you
might purchase. The outcome is determined by level of expertise multiplied by
time on task. Assume lower prices mean less expertise, less time on task, or
both.
SEM firms typically bill monthly. They manage your PPC search advertising and
paid-inclusion spend. For core professional services, which include complete SEO,
expect to spend from $90,000 to $240,000 per Web site annually for a
full-service SEM firm or $50,000 to $90,000 for a solo consultant or smaller SEM
company.
Vendor choice will likely depend on the size and sophistication of your
organization, the size and complexity of your Web site, and reporting needs
combined with campaign goals. Larger organizations tend not to work with solo
practitioners or smaller SEM firms that can't scale.
Conversely, smaller clients are often turned away by big, full-service firms
(the local convenience store may want Deloitte & Touche to audit its books,
but Deloitte isn't geared or priced to serve its needs).
A good way to begin a dialogue with a few SEM vendors and compare their
offerings is through a request for information (RFI), as opposed to the dreaded
SEM request for proposal (RFP), which may be of little value.
Paid-Inclusion Fees
Paid inclusion is a service some search engines offer that enables Web site
owners to submit their URLs directly to a search engine's database. Paid
inclusion is offered by Inktomi, AltaVista, AlltheWeb.com, and AskJeeves/Teoma.
Fees come in two varieties: CPC and cost per URL submitted. Though your SEM firm
will manage these submissions, you must budget this line item separately.
Smaller Web sites and sites that submit fewer than 250 pages may be eligible for
programs priced at $25 annually per submitted URL. You're free to submit all or
some of your Web site's URLs.
Sites with over 250 submitted pages are often required to participate in CPC
programs. Expect nominal set-up fees, with clicks billed from $0.15 to $0.75
each, depending on the type of Web site/business you operate (e.g., the travel
category is more expensive than the bookstore category).
How much to budget for paid inclusion? Determine the number of pages to included
in a search engine database. If a 1,000-page site has only 300 pages of valuable
real estate, estimate an average of one to two clicks per submitted URL per
month per engine program (some do better, some worse), at $0.15 to $0.75 (or try
an average $0.35) CPC. If you're submitting fewer than 250 pages, budget $25
annually per submitted URL per engine program.
PPC Search Engine Advertising Programs
LookSmart serves up its directory-style listings to MSN searchers and bills
advertisers on a CPC basis. MSN just announced plans to drop LookSmart in
January. Until then, advertisers can take advantage of the holiday rush and buy
up this inventory as budget and ROI allow, based on the following pricing: $0.15
CPC for the first 5,000 clicks; higher for clicks 5,001 and up. The higher rate
card is referred to as category-based pricing. It's based on the vertical market
your brand targets. The costliest categories include credit/bad debt, online
gaming, finance/insurance, and communications/Internet hosting at $0.75 CPC.
As is the case with any CPC budget, test to see what CTR and cost to expect.
Anticipate an increase in Inktomi fees next year. Consider it a percentage of
your LookSmart allocation. Inktomi will drive the majority of MSN clicks until
Microsoft launches its own index.
Google's and Overture's PPC programs are difficult to budget. You can spend as
much as your risk tolerance, business model, and conversion rate allow. Prices
for individual keywords are set in an open-auction model. They rise and fall
with the ebb and flow of competition.
There are two schools of thought on how to set a PPC budget. The direct
marketing strategy is to set a testing budget, then run a test to determine CPC
thresholds by keyword and conversion.
Colleague Kevin Lee recommends the direct marketing approach: "[Companies]
should start by testing. If a company will invest in a PPC test, by the end of
it you can know exactly how much to spend."
Another colleague, Gary Stein, views the problem in terms of brands
understanding the value of a click. "How do you know how much a click is
really worth?" asked Gary. "I was talking with [a beverage client]
about search engine marketing, and they're doing pure branding. They're happy to
do it, but what is that click worth to them? It's difficult because you have to
start getting to a place where you understand what intent is worth."
Helpful Tools
The reality is you need budget numbers on paper for the boss. Below are a couple
of imperfect strategies, utilizing Google's and Overture's available tools:
Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool
Google AdWords Keyword Suggestions
Overture View Bids
Overture ROI Calculator
By using these tools, you can investigate keywords and bid prices -- on
Overture, at least. It's a bit more difficult to look up Google bid prices.
Determine an average CPC rate across several dozen keywords and multiply by your
desired traffic based on your conversion rate and ROI. Imperfect, but you will
arrive at a number.
Expert PPC search advertising campaign management performed by an experienced
SEM firm is typically billed as a service fee of 10 to 15 percent of the
campaign spend. Consider this cost when building your budget.
For a Google budget, multiply the Overture number by at least one and a half to
account for Google's higher traffic volume.
Overture's ROI calculator may be of some value in determining bid threshold. In
reality, some keywords convert at higher rates than others. These numbers will
change as you execute your campaign.
Important: No PPC or inclusion program gets your site listed in Google's actual
search results. These search results drive huge quantities of qualified traffic
for many companies.
If you're not optimizing your Web site for the algorithmic natural search
results, you could be missing a significant component of your online audience. A
successful SEM campaign tightly integrates PPC search advertising,
paid-inclusion, and natural SEO strategies into a cohesive solution.
Budgeting for SEM is a challenge, but every financial journey begins with the
first cell on the spreadsheet. Expect to adjust whatever budget you establish in
the first months of the campaign based on performance.
Happy budgeting season!

3.The Ten Commandments of Linking (Part 1)
By Glenn Canady
Gorilla Website Marketing
I've been teaching people the virtues of linking the right way for a long time
in my book, "Gorilla Website Marketing". However, there are many
people out there that just haven't got it figured out yet. It seems that we are
in the middle of a "linking crisis" and it's time that I did my part
in helping to stop it before it gets out of hand!
Right now, I'm getting about 20 link requests a day from webmasters that haven't
a clue about the right way to link! So I decided to write the "Ten
Commandments of Linking" to cover all the basics for effective linking. If
somebody told you to read this article, you just might be violating one of them!
If you are, don't worry about it, you're not going to go to hell or anything.
But you might just get banned on Google and that's almost worse than going to
hell! Your website's search engine rankings and traffic ALWAYS go up when you do
linking right so study them carefully and figure out if you're doing anything
wrong!
The Commandments
#1) Thou Shall Always Put Up A Link BEFORE Asking For A Link
Putting up a link to someone before you ask them for a link is proper linking
etiquette and is much more effective than the alternative. If you're going to
ask somebody for a link then don't waste their time unless you've already linked
to them. This shows that you are serious about linking with their site and
haven't just sp@mmed the universe asking for links!
And if you tell somebody that you've linked to them, be sure that you really
have. Otherwise, you've just lost your credibility. By the way, always tell your
prospective link partner exactly how to link to your site. I do this on all my
sites. For an example of how I do this, just go to one of my link info page
here: http://www.5starshine.com/linkinfo.html
#2) Thou Shall Not Build Link Farms
I'm seeing this commandment being violated more all the time. Some people are in
such a rush to get links that they try to link to EVERYBODY. They don't have any
type of cohesive theme to their link directories. They are just a mish mash of
totally unrelated websites thrown together - in other words a "link
farm"!
Think about the types of sites you want to link with and build a useful
directory that is complementary to what you are offering. For example, my
website, 5 Star Shine, sells a unique type of car wax that lasts for 5 years. If
you look at my Automotive Link Directory on this website, you'll notice that I
have built a nice directory about anything related to cars. Since I sell a car
related product, the people that will find useful information in my directory
are also a great source of potential customers. I'm building a useful resource
and that's why I've been so successful with this directory. Pick some kind of a
niche that is complementary to what you are offering and build a great themed
directory. For example, if you sell merchandise, you might build a gift
directory. That's what I did with my website, 5 Star Closeouts. Since the people
that are in my "gift directory" on this site are also potential buyers
of my closeout merchandise, it's a great way to build a useful resource AND let
potential customers
#3) Thou Shall Not Hide Thy Link Directory!
This one really makes me want to smite somebody! Some guy will ask you for a
link, but when you go to his home page, you look around for 10 minutes and can't
find a way to get to his link area from there. Most of these jokers are just
trying to be sneaky and not let their customers ever find the link directory. My
general rule is that I require a link to the link directory be prominently
displayed on the home page. If I can't find it in 15 seconds or less, chances
are nobody else will and it's of no value to me!
#4) Thou Shall Have No More Than 50 Links On One page.
Actually, 50 links on one page is really pushing it in my opinion. If you have
more than 50 links on one page, then you are doing something wrong. Google now
ignores most web pages that contain more than about 50 links because many are
just link farms. When I see the 4th Commandment being broken, it's usually
because somebody is trying to have just one page of links. Of course, they're
usually violating the 2nd commandment also because the site is usually a link
farm too! It's very important that your links are broken up into relevant
categories and that each one isn't over 50 links. To do this properly, you can
use a program like Zeus to organize your links properly. This is the program
that I use on all my sites and it's been the key for my own number one rankings.
If you'd like a discount on Zeus, be sure to get a Gorilla Marketing membership.
#5) Thou Shall Only Ask For a Link When It Makes Sense For Both Websites!
This is a pet peeve of mine actually. I can't stand when some idiot wants me to
add their Thailand hotel website to my 5 Star Shine automotive directory! I
don't know what planet these people come from, but they need to get a clue!
Remember, you need to be building a valuable resource with your link directory.
If you are marketing a hotel in Thailand, then build some kind of a travel theme
into your link directory, or maybe a link directory of all the things to do in
Thailand perhaps. Be creative but always keep this in mind. Your goal is to
build a resource that will attract the kind of people that would be interested
in what you're offering. If you do this right, your business will pick up
dramatically because your link directory will always be attracting potential
customers.

--> WHAT IN THE WORLD IS "MIMAIL?"
"Mimail" is the name given to a worm that spreads via email. The
worm launches when the email recipient opens an infected
attachment. It will either steal information from the user's
computer and send it to another email address or command the
computer to launch a denial-of-service attack, typically against
anti-Spam Web sites. The worm affects computers running Microsoft
operating systems, including Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, NT and ME.
It does not affect computers running Macintosh operating systems,

1. How important are the search engines?
by Robert Nixon
If you do not have your own domain and a website for it,
then the search engines and today's newsletter really will
not mean that much to you.
You are probably submitting an affiliate or associate site, getting the owner an
ever increasing boost in HIS/HER'S ranking on the internet.
IF the engines even accept the submission, and they will not tell
you, on the most part, if it is NOT accepted.
I have written before about Alexa and the fact that it is going to
be a big mover and influence upon the internet.
One great thing YOU can do with the Alexa toolbar installed on YOUR
computer is that you can set home page on your browser to your site,
thus giving your site more traffic with Alexa.
YOU can also use the toolbar to see who is linking into the sites YOU
visit and thus you can determine if you want YOUR site linked with them also.
I have also written about Exact Seek, and have a link to them on a couple of my
site pages.
With the Alexa toolbar and the Exact Seek box, YOUR site will get better and
better rankings on the internet.
List your site with the DMOZ, the open directory project, AND many of the OTHER
major engines will get your site when a search is given them for YOUR keywords.
This is critical as some of the major's do not accept any listings other than paid, from
some selected 'submitters' and will only list
YOUR site when they run out of those and go to a general web search.
Having YOUR own website is the KEY factor in making money on the internet with
'multiple streams of income'.
There is NO reason why YOU should not have one.
1. You can get Free ones
2. You can get very low cost ones
3. You can get site page 'templates' to make YOURS unique.
The key is that it will be YOURS....if you ever change associations, then all you
have to do is change the 'lead in' and links to another one.
Submit YOUR site and it's pages NOT someone else's.
NOTE:
When you FIRST link your site to Alexa, as the owner, you can enter the sites
YOU want Alexa to show when someone visits your site (the first ten).
Select Engines such as MSN...and others that do not have their own
databases.
This is the FIRST 'step to success'

Alexa-Based Ranking Algorithm Used Across SIX Search Engines
ExactSeek's Alexa-based ranking algorithm has now been applied across our entire
search engine network. The search engines comprising the network are as follows:
Aesop.com
OnSeek.com
MaxPromo.com
ExactSeek.com
SitesOnDisplay.com
Best-SearchEngine.com
Websites submitted to any one of these engines are automatically listed in the
other five. This is true of paid inclusion listings as well.
ExactSeek Database To Grow
Within the next 30 - 45 days, an additional 2 to 3 million site listings will be
added to the ExactSeek database. Our goal is to make ExactSeek the DMOZ of
search engines with a database of quality site listings numbering around 5
million.
Do-It-Yourself Site Listing Updates
If you missed our last ExactSeek update, here's a reminder that anyone who has
submitted a website to ExactSeek can now login to a Member Account Manager to
edit, enhance, delete and recrawl their site listings. To login into your
account, or to obtain a Member ID and Password, visit the:
ExactSeek Member Login Page
Improving Your Site Ranking
Websites listed in ExactSeek are ranked on the basis of content relevancy and
traffic data provided by Alexa Internet. Text content, taken from site Title and
Meta Description tags (if found by the ExactSeek crawler), is displayed in the
search result listings. The content of these 2 tags, along with the keywords in
the Meta Keywords tag (if found), is also compared to page body content as a
check of overall relevancy. In cases where sites have more or less equal content
relevancy for specific keyword searches, Alexa popularity data determines which
sites receive higher ranking.
In addition to standard optimization techniques, almost any traffic building
strategy will work to improve your site's ExactSeek ranking, including:
Link exchanges
PPC campaigns
Addition of quality content
Email marketing
Online or offline advertising
Since Alexa site ranking numbers play a significant factor in determining site
ranking in all 6 engines powered by ExactSeek, we strongly recommend that you
download the Alexa Toolbar to track your site's weekly and monthly popularity
status.

3.The Future of WebSite Ranking
By Mel Strocen (c) 2003
The recent shakeup in Google's search results, which set the SEO (search engine
optimization) community buzzing and saw tens of thousands of webmasters watch
their site ranking plummet, was in many ways inevitable. Almost all SEO
companies and most savvy webmasters had a fairly good handle on what Google
considered important. And since SEO, by definition, is the art of manipulating
website ranking (not always with the best interests of searchers in mind), it
was only a matter of time until Google decided to make some changes.
Forums:
WebmasterWorld Forums
Search Engine Forums
SearchGuild Forums
To date, most of the commentary has been predictable, ranging from the critical
and analytical to the speculative.
Here's a typical example from one of our readers:
"I'm not sure what has happened to Google's vaunted algorithm, but searches
are now returning unrelated junk results as early as the second page and even
first page listings are a random collection of internal pages (not index pages)
from minor players in my industry (mostly re-sellers) vaguely related to my
highly-focused keyword search queries."
So, what is Google trying to accomplish? As one author put it, Google has a
"democratic" vision of the Web. Unfortunately for Google and the other
major search engines, those with a grasp of SEO techniques were beginning to
tarnish that vision by stacking the search result deck in favor of their
websites.
Search Engine Optimization or Ranking Manipulation?
Author and search engine expert, Barry Lloyd commented as follows: "Google
has seen their search engine results manipulated by SEOs to a significant extent
over the past few years. Their reliance on PageRankā"¢ to grade the
authority of pages has led to the wholesale trading and buying of links with the
primary purpose of influencing rankings on Google rather than for natural
linking reasons."
Given Google's dominance of search and how important ranking well in Google is
to millions of websites, attempts at rank manipulation shouldn't come as a
surprise to anyone. For many, achieving a high site ranking is more important
than the hard work it takes to legitmately earn a good ranking.
The Problem with Current Site Ranking Methods
There will always be those who are more interested in the end result than on how
they get there and site ranking that is based on site content (links, keywords,
etc.) and interpreted by ranking algorithms will always be subject to
manipulation. Why? Because, for now, crawlers and algorithms lack the
intelligence to make informed judgements on site quality.
A short while ago, author, Mike Banks Valentine published an article entitled
SEO Mercilessly Murdered by Copywriters!. The article rightly pointed out SEO's
focus on making text and page structure "crawler friendly". Other SEO
authors have written at great length about the need for "text, text,
text" in page body content as well as in Meta, Heading, ALT, and Link tags.
They are all correct and yet they are all missing (or ignoring) the point which
is that the "tail is wagging the dog". Search engines are determining
what is relevant, not the people using those engines. Searchers are relegated to
the role of engine critics and webmasters to being students of SEO.
SEO manipulation will continue and thrive as long as search engines base their
algorithms on page and link analysis. The rules may change, but the game will
remain the same.
Therein lies the problem with all current search engine ranking algorithms.
SEO's will always attempt to position their sites at the top of search engine
results whether their sites deserve to be there or not, and search engines will
continue to tweak their algorithms in an attempt to eliminate SEO loopholes. If
there is a solution to this ongoing battle of vested interests, it won't come
from improving page content analysis.
Incorporating User Popularity into Ranking Algorithms
The future of quality search results lies in harnessing the opinions of the
Internet masses - in other words, by tying search results and site ranking to
User Popularity. Google's "democratic" vision of the Web will never be
achieved by manipulating algorithm criteria based on content. It will only be
achieved by factoring in what is important to people, and people will always
remain the best judge of what that is. The true challenge for search engines in
the future is how to incorporate web searcher input and preferences into their
ranking algorithms.
Website ranking based on user popularity - the measurement of searcher visits to
a site, pages viewed, time viewed, etc. - will be far less subject to
manipulation and will ensure a more satisfying search experience. Why? Because
web sites that receive the kiss of approval from 10,000, 100,000 or a million
plus surfers a month are unlikely to disappoint new visitors. Although some
websites might achieve temporary spikes in popularity through link exchanges,
inflated or false claims, email marketing, pyramid schemes, etc., these spikes
would be almost impossible to sustain over the long-term. As Lincoln said
"You can fool some of the people all the time. You can fool all the people
some of the time. But you can't fool all the people all the time." Any
effective ranking system based on surfer input will inevitably be superior to
current systems.
To date, none of the major search engines have shown a serious interest in
incorporating user popularity into their ranking algorithms. As of this writing,
ExactSeek is the only search engine that has implemented a site ranking
algorithm based on user popularity.
Resistance to change, however, is not the only reason user data hasn't made its
way into ranking algorithms. ExactSeek's new ranking algorithm was made possible
only as a result of its partner arrangement with Alexa Internet, one of the
oldest and largest aggregator's of user data on the Web. Alexa has been
collecting user data through its toolbar (downloaded over 10 million times)
since 1997 and is currently the only web entity with a large enough user base to
measure site popularity and evaluate user preferences in a meaningful way.
The Challenges Facing User Popularity Based Ranking
1. The Collection Of User Data:
In order for web user data to play a significant role in search results and site
ranking, it would need to be gathered in sufficient volume and detail to
accurately reflect web user interests and choices. The surfing preferences of a
few million toolbar users would be meaningless when applied to a search engine
database of billions of web pages. Even Alexa, with its huge store of user data,
is only able to rank 3 to 4 million websites with any degree of accuracy.
2. Privacy:
The collection of user data obviously has privacy implications. Privacy concerns
have become more of an issue in recent years and could hinder any attempt to
collect user data on a large scale. The surfing public would need to cooperate
in such an endeavor and be persuaded of the benefits.
3. Interest:
Web search continues to grow in popularity with more than 80% of Internet users
relying on search engines to find what they need. However, with the exception of
site owners who have a vested interest in site ranking, most web searchers have
not expressed any serious dissatisfaction with the overall quality of search
results delivered by the major engines. Harnessing the cooperation and active
participation of this latter and much larger group would be difficult, if not
impossible.
The future of web search and website ranking belongs in the hands of all
Internet users, but whether it ends up there depends on how willing they are to
participate in that future.

--> UK SPAM LAW TRIGGERS DELUGE OF COMPLAINTS
The public deluged the British agency designated to enforce new
anti-spam legislation with complaints of dubious e-mail messages
in the first 24 hours of the law's existence.
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5123684.html
--------------------------------------------------
1.OUR NEW ANTI-SPAM LAW
In the United States:
The Law, In Brief. CANSPAM does not make spam, the practice of sending
unsolicited emails, illegal.
It does have some specific requirements for commercial emails which we'll get to
shortly. The new law covers all email for which the primary purpose is the
commercial advertisement or promotion of a product or service.
The law excludes emails related to transactional relationships such as billing
statements, announcements of warranty information, follow-ups to customer
requests, etc. The new federal law supercedes most state and local email laws,
except those that cover fraud and deception. This includes the controversial
California law.
The key rules you must follow to send legal email marketing messages are:
1.include your full address within every email message
2.Subject lines must be descriptive in nature about the content of the email.
There are specific civil penalties about the use of deceptive subject lines.
Subject lines such as "news for a friend" would be considered
misleading.
3.the from line should be from you or your business and not a sales pitch or
marketing message
4.Use a reply address that will be active for at least thirty days after sending
your email
the bill covers all commercial email solicitations, both solicited and
unsolicited.
5.A conspicuously displayed unsubscribe link must be included within every email
Any unsubscribe requests must be honored within ten days
6.In the case of unsolicited email, the marketer must label the email as an
advertisement. You may use the letters ADV in the subject line but this
particular identification is not required.
7.It is now required that a valid physical postal address of the sender be found
within all emails. (in emails under CANSPAM)
8.Related to sexually oriented email, a message within the subject line or at
the top of the email must indicate the email's sexual nature.
The law also specifically bans the practice of harvesting emails through an
automated means. This would mean it's now illegal to obtain email addresses is
to by crawling websites.
This includes purchasing harvested email addresses from someone else.
The new federal antispam legislation also has several provisions related to the
sending of emails with false or misleading headers, deceptive subject lines. But
you wouldn't do that anyway, right?
---------------------------------------------------------
2.How the new law effects you
By Robert Nixon
What this means to you is that there are finally a set of parameters for you to
follow.
But also for your competition.
Now there are guidelines, more of your competitors will be sending out
advertisements as they will not be afraid of 'shutdowns' due to NOT following
the guidelines.
This DOES NOT mean to stop using verifications and opt-in methods for getting
interested parties to you list.
For link type of sites:
1.If your using an AutoResponders to send your initial 'confirmation' of
posting, be sure to include what is required by the guidelines along with a
statement of how you got their e-mail address.
2.Be sure to tell them in this message if this is a one time response or if
there will also be 'follow up' messages.
3.Include what will happen if they select to be 'removed' from future messages.
IE: that they will be banned from future postings to your links site, etc.
The guidelines are for those that follow them, just like any law.
For those that DO NOT follow them.....the recourse is in what happens when they
are caught.
YOU want to establish yourself as a valid business person, so the new guidelines
will assist you in doing so in the eyes of your prospects and present clients.
YOU want to show that you have nothing to hide, that your products or services
are solid and that you will be around for future business dealings.
REMEMBER:
E-mails are more important for communications AFTER you have a relationship
going with your client.
UNTIL then, all they do for you
is show volume to and from your site via the activity thru your links type of
sites BOUND to your domain.
The response to those type of messages are very poor to start, with maybe a
click thru ratio of 5 percent or less.
A real shot in the dark, as they say. However, you will not want to miss every
chance of finding a new prospect to be sent to your website, and thus to your
products.
There are only two ways I get e-mail addresses form the general internet
population.
1.
A. From submissions to my links sites via submitters the sites are listed with.
B. From direct submissions to them from my site pages.
2. From going thru the opt-in process to get on any other of my list.
The ones that count and will produce are the ones you get when someone takes
your product. The person then, wants to be able to communicate with you. They
will ask your opinion about things and want clarifications on things also. This
e-mail WILL be good, but do not abuse it, use it ONLY in a professional manner.
(this is what the guidelines are really addressing, as it appears to me)
I let my other associations take care of those chores when someone I refer gets
one or more of THEIR products. My job is done then anyway,
I get the sale and money percentage for getting them a new client.

3.Designing Your Web Site to Maximize Traffic (Part 1)
By Brendon Turner
Designing your site to maximize traffic from the search engines is not a
difficult task but it does require you to think ahead and plan your SEO strategy
carefully. If you have not yet built your web site and are still in the initial
planning stages then you may have an easier time of it. If you already have an
existing web site, then you may need to take the time to read up on these SEO
strategies and make some changes to incorporate them into your web site.
I will discuss 13 ways in which you can improve on your existing web site or
boost a brand new web site into the stratosphere of high rankings.
(Part one here, is six of them....editor's note)
These are not really SEO tricks but rather tried, tested and true methods that
we know to work effectively. We all know that in reality there are no real SEO
tricks. True success is achieved through hard work, research and implementation
of a thorough and complete SEO strategy.
Without further ado here is a checklist of important items to consider and
implement into your SEO strategy.
1.Using Javascript or Other Unspiderable Code
If you intend to use Javascript on your web page it is best to use it sparingly
or not at all. Search engine spiders cannot read Javascript and it is possible
that along with ignoring it when they come across it on your page, they may also
get hung up on it if you are using a lot of it. If you really need to use
Javascript you can safely use it by putting the code into a separate JS file and
calling it with a single line of code which you place between your <head>
and </head> tags within your web page. The code used to include your JS
file looks like this:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"
src="replace-with-JavaScript-file-name.js"></SCRIPT>
2.Using Style Guidelines Effectively
If you are using CSS style commands, do not include them within your actual web
page source code. You don't want search engine spiders to have to wade through
100 lines of unreadable code before they reach your actual content. Instead,
place your style guidelines into a separate CSS file and call them with a single
line of code from within your <head> and </head> tags by using the
following code:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="replace-with-style-file-name.css">
3.Primary Keyword Layout
Examine your web site from a source code point of view and ensure that your
primary keywords or phrases will be spidered first. When search engine spiders
read your page they read the source code just like we would read a book from
left to right - top to bottom. We know that search engines place higher
relevancy on keywords and phrases which appear closer to the top of a page so it
stands to reason that if you've got a large table full of graphics appearing at
the top of your source code before your primary keywords, then you can achieve
higher rankings by adjusting your layout and placing a well written search
engine optimized paragraph above that table full of graphics.
4.Spiderable Text Present on Each Page
Many times I have seen some very pretty web sites, but their chances of ranking
high for any relevant keywords have been dashed by the use of only graphics and
very little or no text on the pages. It is very important to your SEO strategy
that you make sure that you've taken the time to write some quality textual
content for your pages. Don't write nonsensical text filled with blatant sp@m.
Instead, take a few extra minutes and write 4-5 quality paragraphs which clearly
explain the theme of your site and the particular page your writing for. If you
feel you haven't got the time, ambition or skills to write your own content
don't stress over it. There are other options. You could visit the SEO
Copywriting forum at FreeSEOAdvice.com to ask for help and get some valuable
tips. Or you could hire a professional team to handle the project for you. Check
out eTrafficJams.com for help with your SEO strategy and copywriting needs.
5.Proper Use of robots.txt File
On several occasions I have performed an analysis of a client's web site only to
discover that they had inadvertently blocked spider access to their web site by
incorrectly formatting their robots.txt file. It is critical that you know what
you're doing when you use a robots.txt file. If you are unsure of the correct
syntax when modifying or creating a robots.txt file, I recommend you not use a
robots.txt file at all. This may sound counterproductive, but it's better to be
safe than sorry. Accidentally blocking the spiders can result in a loss of all
your rankings. It would almost be like starting over again to repair the damage.
For help on correctly formatting your robots.txt file, visit robotstxt.org.
6.Dead Links and 404 Errors
If you are not checking for broken links on your web site, then you should start
immediately and make this a part of your SEO strategy. You can never be 100%
sure of your link integrity, especially when your site has 100, or more, pages.
Aside from losing potential customers into a vortex of 404 errors, you risk more
than that from a search engine perspective. When a search engine spider visits
your web site and finds broken links, the impression left is that your site is
not regularly maintained and updated. Not much is known about how the engines
view this, but your crawl status may be assigned a low priority by visiting
search engine spiders. In other words, the spiders may not visit your site as
frequently as they visit sites with 100% link integrity. So make sure you
download some link checking software and begin a regular schedule of verifying
your link structure.

A buffer overrun vulnerability has been found by a Danish company
in Yahoo! Messenger. An intruder could exploit the flaw by
sending a long piece of code, which would overflow into protected

I give classes on the internet, live and on-line, once
a week for one of my associate programs.
One of the more common questions asked is how to determine
the 'keywords' to use when marketing or in your 'keywords' section
when doing meta tagging.
Actually, there are several ways to do this but they all are determined
by what you have put on your website page, and what is says.
1. Read the page and write down what you consider the keywords after you have written it.
2. Select keywords and write copy that includes them. Avoid repeating them a lot on the page.
3. Write and save the page, then use a keyword generation program to do it for you.
4. Check keywords popularity usage on the internet and try to get some of the more common ones in your page.
On my 'free stuff' page, at my domain, I have links to a couple of sites that will spider your page and suggest keywords for you.
http://www.cpucash.net/go/go.php/Freestuff
Find a search engine and use it's popularity checker, as if you were going to bid on them, for getting one of your site pages listed.
When doing submissions:
This will depend upon the type of site you are submitting to.
When submitting to a certain category, then at least one of your keywords should contain that category name.
I have also noticed that many persons new to the internet business marketing discipline tend to
Spam the engines by submitting into category's not even remotely related to their keywords nor page themes.
The reasoning being...the more the merrier !!
(or "I don't know any better")
This is NOT the case and your submissions will not be allowed and even banned if you continue to do so.
This is considered SPAM to the engines !!
This is also one reason so many engines will not take 'associate' pages, tho they will not tell you so.
It makes no sense to submit the 'associate' or 'member' pages directly anyway...YOU want to submit your domain pages and in them have links to your
programs (products).
Even a Free Website is better than nothing, till you can get your own domain,
hosting, etc (if you are on a limited start up budget), and I can give you one...
http://www.netmarkpro.net/cpucash/signup.html
Of course you will not have complete control of the entire page, as you will when you can get your own
domain, but it is a start !!

2.Spyware Be Gone!
If It Were Only That Easy
By WebAdvantage.net
Meet Spyware, the James Bond of the computer world. It's sleek, cunning, and perpetually gets itself out of jams - it's "slippery." What is it and why does it never seem to get caught? The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) seems to know.
Released just a day prior to Representative Mary Bono's (R-CA) public hearing before a congressional subcommittee (regarding, of course, spyware) CDT released a thorough report on the subject - Ghosts in Our Machines: Background and Policy Proposals on the Spyware Problem.
Spyware, a loosely defined term, is essentially software that aids any unauthorized party in obtaining private information from one's computer without his or her knowledge.
The term can apply to anything and everything from key stroke loggers, web cookies, web browsing trackers, and programs designed to help provide security patches for users. Moreover, and perhaps more annoyingly, are adware applications; they essentially piggyback on peer-to-peer file-sharing software and free downloads, like Gator or Kazaa. Occasionally, this is also referred to as Scumware.
"Computer users are increasingly finding programs on their computers that they did not know were installed and that they cannot uninstall," said CDT associate director Ari Schwartz. Subsequently, this causes privacy and security holes that can hinder the performance of computers. Software companies, in turn, mistakingly take the blame. They are taking the calls relating to slow connection or e-mail interference, said Schwartz. And it's costing them money.
Okay, so CDT criticizes spyware and other downloadable adware programs. It wants a solution to its top issue. But isn't that what Bono and several other key legislators want? Not necessarily.
What CDT wants is not some direct, pin-pointed piece of legislation aimed at ceasing spyware, but rather basic privacy standards to which all programs should be held. It feels, according to Schwartz, that "more thought needs to be given to spyware as a problem of trespass in addition to as a privacy issue."
Defining the term "spyware" is a tricky task, one that Bono and her allies seem to be forgetting. Under the legislative definition of spyware, restrictions would encompass an array of programs - most cookies, even ones that are temporarily stored in browsers, virus protection software, and even software that keeps tabs on children's computer use.
Because of this, CDT thinks that customers will be better served by privacy legislation - legislation that forces software programs to give computer users notice if they are collecting any type of information and, more importantly, give users the ability to easily turn off or uninstall the program.
CDT associate director Alan Davidson stated, "The question is do people know how their computer is being used, and do they have a meaningful choice to uninstall a program if they don't want it. In the most troubling cases of spyware, the answer is still no." Davidson also wants adware providers to offer clear instructions regarding contact information so that users can call them, not the software companies, concerning complaints.
For the spyware makers who are truly, in current terms, legal, there is still hope for survival. Pest Patrol, Aluria Software, and Lavasoft - antihacking programmers - have formed the Consortium of Antispyware Technology (COAST) to increase consumer awareness and one day create a code of conduct for adware. Roger Thompson, vice president of product and development at Pest Patrol, reported that in this year alone his company received 60,000 incidents of spyware abuse. COAST offers great opportunities for those spyware companies that truly want to comply to standards so that they don't go down with the "dangerous spyware" label.
Having kicked off a campaign to gather spyware horror stories, CDT suggests that, for now, computer users should do several things in order to deal with invasive applications:
1. Run a spyware detection and removal utility on your computer
2. Be wary of installing free, ad-supported applications
3. Read up on new software and read all licensing agreements before installing
4. Check for and read privacy policies posted on company websites
5. Do not accept downloads from pop-up windows or from unknown websites
Although the efforts of Bono, Senator John Edwards, and various others are applaudable, legislation alone cannot address all of the concerns raised by spyware. It is the industry itself, believes CDT, that can regulate illegal activity. The current definition of spyware is rather fuzzy and slippery, therefore making it difficult to draft legislation. Looks like 007 has a little competition.

3.Designing Your Web Site
to Maximize Traffic (Part 2)
By Brendon Turner
(Part 1 of this article was published on Monday, Dec. 15/03 in SiteProNews and can be found in the SPN archives.
Using Images For Primary Navigation Links
Many webmasters like to use fancy looking navigation links but, in doing so, they fail to establish a theme for their sites. For instance, using a graphical link back to your home page does not tell the search engine spiders what that link is about unless the spider actually visits that page. If you use optimized ALT text on that graphical home page link, then that would be a step in the right direction. But to maximize the effect and clearly define the theme of your web site, you need to use a text link that has your primary keyword or phrase within the link text. This is called Link Reputation.
Home, Site Map and Contact Page Links
The Home, Site Map and Contact pages are your site's primary pages and should be your SEO strategy top priority. It is essential that these pages be spidered and exposed to your site visitors. To ensure that they are spidered, place links to them near the top of your source code on every page of your web site. Your home page is, of course, the main entrance to your web site so you want that to be the focal point in the search engines. Your site map page should (if properly optimized) have links to all of your sub pages and use primary keywords belonging to each sub page within the link text pointing to those sub pages. Your contact page is just as important because it's used by visitors who have questions or who wish to order products and services.
Redirected Pages
When a web page has outlived its usefulness, webmasters will, on occasion, redirect visitors hitting that page to another page. Search engine spiders, however, take a dim view of page redirects. If you change the content of your site and find that you have no further use for a page, do not place a redirect on that page. Instead, remove the outdated content and replace it with something relevant. Include a text link to your home page or to a new replacement page. When you remove a page or place a redirect on an outdated page, you're cheating yourself out of better rankings and search engine traffic. Moreover, using page redirects can result in the removal of your site listing in search engine databases with a consequent loss of revenue.
Excessively Small Type Font Sizes
Text in a font smaller than font size 2 is normally reserved for copyright information and the legal jargon often seen at the bottom of web pages. Use font size 2, or greater, for the majority of text on your page. Font size is a major factor in SEO strategy because the font size used defines the relevancy a search engine spider assigns to the content it finds on your page. An example of this would be the text within heading tags (H1 through to H6). Text surrounded with H1 tags has a higher relevancy placed on it than text surrounded with H6 tags. Visit the World Wide Web Consortium website for a better understanding of how on-page text is viewed by search engine spiders with regard to importance and relevancy. Search engine spiders tend to follow the W3 HTML standard.
Hidden Text, Door Way Pages and Other Tricks
Nowadays search engines are pretty smart and trying to trick them is not a wise course of action. Take some time to stop and examine your approach before proceeding with your SEO strategy. The rule of thumb is that if it looks like spam or could be perceived as spam by the search engines, then it probably is spam. The last thing you need is for a competitor to report unethical SEO tactics to the search engines. Such tactics could result in a loss of existing site listings as well as a ban on future submissions. So, to ensure the longevity of your online business, stay away from any technique that looks unethical.
Using HTML Frames
In short, don't. Frames are not very search engine friendly because search engines cannot read a framed source document that tells your browser to load more than one page in your browser window at the same time. Thus, achieving a high PageRank on your home page is difficult. Frames also make it hard for search engine spiders to find all of your sub pages.
Non-Spider-Friendly URL's
If the URL's for your web site contain characters such as &, $, =, %, etc., that is they are dynamic in nature, then search engine spiders may not be able to read them. And, if they can't be read, then the search engine spiders won't be able to follow them to index your pages. However, there are solutions available to fix this problem. For example, webmasters who have sites hosted on servers with Unix operating systems can use Apache mod_rewrite to rewrite URL's that contain a session ID, or other nasty characters, into search engine spider friendly URL's. See this page at WebDevelopersJournal.com for more information about how you can invite search engine spiders into your dynamic web site.
SEO, of course, is not just limited to the 13 areas covered in this article, but if you apply the SEO strategies outlined in these 13 areas to your web site, you will find that your site rankings and traffic improve dramatically.
